What Is the RTM Protocol™?

The Reconsolidation of Traumatic Memories (RTM) Protocol™ is a structured, non-exposure-based therapeutic approach designed to reduce — and in many cases resolve — the emotional intensity associated with traumatic memories without requiring the client to relive or retell the trauma. The protocol follows a clearly defined, procedural framework that supports consistent, competency-based delivery.

Targets Core PTSD Symptoms

Designed to address the emotional charge linked to traumatic memory activation.

Non-Exposure- Based

Clients are not required to relive or retell traumatic events.

Structured and Replicable

A manualized framework supporting standardized training and consistent implementation.

Trackable Outcomes

Symptom changes can be monitored across sessions using validated clinical measures.

“After only 4 sessions with the RTM Protocol, I now sleep much more restful and wake up feeling more optimistic about life in general. I’ve dealt with anger, guilt and shame and I have a much more positive outlook with these specific events that I used to get upset about. I have encouraged other Vets to try it and they also liked it.”

The Reconsolidation of Traumatic Memories (RTM) Protocol for PTSD: a Case Study

Gray, R., Budden-Potts, D., & Bourke, F. (2017). Journal of Experiential Psychotherapy, vol. 20(4): 47-61.
This case study describes Carl, a Vietnam veteran, diagnosed with PTSD who volunteered for treatment in a 30-person waitlist-designed randomized control trial (RCT) of the RTM Protocol™. Carl completed three 120-minute sessions of the RTM Protocol™. Post-treatment measures found significant reductions in PTSD symptoms that were maintained at 2, 6, 26, and 52 weeks post-treatment. Carl has experienced the intrusive symptoms of PTSD for more than 40 years. He is now symptom-free.

Reconsolidation of Traumatic Memories (RTM) for PTSD — a Case Series

Gray, R., & Teall, B. (2016). Journal of Experiential Psychology, 19(4):59-69.
This case series describes four individuals previously diagnosed with PTSD who volunteered for treatment in a waitlist-designed randomized control trial of the RTM Protocol™. In the larger study, 96% (25/26) of treated clients no longer met diagnostic criteria for PTSD at the end of treatment, with these gains maintained at six and 26 weeks post-treatment.
